Biography

Born in 1995. Lives and works in Kyoto, Japan. hayate kobayashi is an artist with a polyglot’s eye. A resident at HAPS Studio, Kyoto. Recently graduated from Art and Media at the Berlin University of the Arts. hayate’s artistic practices consist of self-made apparatus, moving images, performance, and multilingual poetry. They speak with his own narrative to capture the transborderers’ linguistic sensibility. Through performance art, his latest practice pursues the voice emerging in the transition process of identities and words through migration.

Based on his local research of image studies and media archaeology, kobayashi explores a new form of narrative with moving images and self-made apparatuses. His recent works focus on exophony and its narrative in perspectives of translation and identities.

He completed a Master Program in Film and New Media Studies at the Graduate School of Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts. His recent performance was performed at KYOTO EXPERIMENT 2025, Kyoto Art Center, Kyoto, Japan (2025). His work was selected for the New Face Award of the Art Division at the 24th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2021. His recent solo exhibitions include: Appeartus #1, Chidori Bunka, Osaka, Japan(2026); Polyparole, Art Center BUG, Tokyo, Japan (2024); and his work has been included in group exhibition such as: MORE STRANGE THINGS, silent green, Berlin (2024).

With research in media archaeology, he creates self-made apparatus. Through these apparatuses, he explores narrative that incorporate moving images, poetry, performance, and literature. He characterizes this process of creation as “main-making,” while simultaneously creating a series that reflects on the relationship between daily life and artistic practice, which he refers to as “sub-making.”
